RCA WiFi Committee

One of RCA's current issues is Virtual Infrastructure which includes determining the current areas covered by cable, DSL, and wireless broadband service and request service providers to broaden coverage to include the entire Reston area, making it a "hot-spot"

.  To this end, RCA's WiFi Committee was organized in September 2006 and its website was launched shortly thereafter at: http://www.restonwi-fi.org

WiFi stands for “wireless fidelity.”  A person with a Wi-Fi device, such as a computer, telephone, or personal digital assistant (PDA) can connect to the Internet free of charge when in proximity of an access point.

The mission of the RCA WiFi committee is to bring WiFi to Reston in successive stages over a 2-year period. This committee with RCA Director Gary Lee Thomas as Chair, envisions free and reliable Internet access to residents and visitors of Reston .  The group is actively seeking liaisons with RCC and RA, a legal advisor, and a committee secretary.  One of its first steps will be to select a test site to build its first WiFi hot-spot.  It will also work to build public awareness and financial support for a wireless Reston .

The RCA WiFi committee also plans to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the VA Office of Telework Promotion and Broadband Assistance, recently created by Gov. Kaine to encourage telework as a family-friendly, business-friendly public policy that promotes workplace efficiency and reduces strain on transportation infrastructure.

The members of the RCA WiFi Committee are as follows:

Gary Lee Thomas - Chair (temporarily stationed in Iraq)
Jim Gunther -         Communications Co-Lead, and Technical Advisor
Jan Bradshaw -      Communications Co-Lead
Eric Waldron -       Website-Content Coordinator
Colin Mill -             RCA-RCC Liaison
Open -                  RCA-RA Liaison
Open -                  RCA-Hunter Mill District Liaison
Open -                  Legal Advisor
Open -                  Committee Secretary
