RCA Makes Organization Changes

Mar. 24, 2008 - Reston Citizens Association (RCA) made some organization changes at its monthly board meeting on 3/24/08.  Mike Corrigan, President of RCA for 4 years, stepped down to become an At-Large Director and will be chairman of the Grants Committee.  Vice President Marion Stillson was elected Pres.; and South Lakes Director, Colin Mills was elected Vice President.  Marie Huhtala, a candidate for Hunter Mill Supv. in 2007, was accepted onto the board as the Hunters Woods Director.  This leaves one vacancy for South Lakes.  Corrigan was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation for his 4 years of dedication to the Reston Community and the board gathered at Richard and Marion Stillson's home after the meeting to congratulate all the board members in their new positions.

Election of Board members will take place at the Reston Festival July 12-13, 2008.  Anyone wishing to file to be a candidate can download a form from RCA's website at: http://www.restoncitizensassociation.org/elections/.  A new RCA committee has just formed in Jan. 2008 called the Reston Accessibility Committee. As its first project, it will be contacting individual businesses in Reston in the name of RCA to request and work out changes which would improve access to facilities the Committee members use or would like to use.  For information, contact Ken Fredgren at 703/391-9019 or fredgren.k@juno.com or visit http://www.restoncitizensassociation.org/issues/accessibility.htm.  Anyone interested in serving on this or any RCA committee, please contact a board member.  The full board can be viewed at:  http://www.restoncitizensassociation.org/board/default.htm#board

Founded in 1967 to protect and defend Reston's founding principles, RCA is a nonstock, nonprofit civic association.  It serves over 60,000 people living in Small Tax District #5, an area somewhat larger then the that covered by the Reston Deed.  RCA has modest financial resources, largely voluntary contributions and proceeds from special events.  It is run by volunteers, including its 13 member Board of Directors.  In the absence of government (Reston is not incorporated as a political entity), RCA seeks to protect and to promote the social and political interests of Reston, serving as a forum for all residents and a voice and advocate for the community with County and State government.  Meetings are televised on Ch. 28 RCTV on the 4th Mon. of each month at 8pm.

In Oct. 2007 the organization presented to Reston's elected officials, 3700 signatures on a petition requesting that a referendum be held to allow the Reston residents to vote on whether to become a town.  There has been no action taken on this request by Reston's representatives to the VA General Assembly.
